Request Information on Hosting

Thank you for your interest in the Exodus Project. Here is a brief FAQ about Exodus and what we offer.

Q: Who are you?

A: My name is Joshua Woodruff, and I am the administrator. My operating partner in this is our Webmaster, Tony. He will handle many of the requests for design and content.

Q: What is the Project?

A: I saw a need in the role-playing community for somewhere to host files and run chat rooms using the commercially available DigiChat engine. In the beginning, we were going to be only one chat, but realized we couldn't pay the bills alone and that we had a lot of extra horsepower that we weren't using. So I opened the project to others, and have been pleasantly surprised by the response.

Q: How much is it per month?

A: Under our current bandwidth, server costs, and annual DigiChat license and split amongst five chats, the price comes out to $25/month for each chat. This is far less than if you wanted to run it yourself. (Trust me, there's no profit involved from the project.)

Q: What do we get for our money?

A: 50 simultaneous chatters, 25 mb of disk space (dice rollers, chat rules and setting, whatever), SQL database, and the use of the shared T3 connection. Also, two programmers, being myself and Tony P. I'm usually available by instant message (either MSN or by emailing my Cell phone), and Tony is usually around in MSN/AIM/Yahoo too.

Q: Any contracts to sign?

A: This has been a gray spot that I've not well addressed yet. There are no contracts beyond something called a "gentleman\'s agreement". Your responsibilities as the head of your chat (the person who pays the bills, in other words) are to do some things that promote the well being of the project.

  1. We are not at "war" with other chats, inside and outside the project.
  2. That you follow the laws of the United States, regarding porn and/or children (COPPA: Nobody under the age of 13, period. Federal law, folks.). If you want to run a more adult setting, have your pages clearly marked with 18+ years of age.
  3. That your payment is prompt.
  4. That you have a term of service or other list of rules regarding acceptable behavior.
  5. You can advertise your chats, or other chats on your chat. In fact, we encourage it. Just don't advertise where you aren't wanted. We don't currently use commercial advertisement companies for pennies a page view, you your chat will remain commercial banner free.

Q: What about your end of the affair?

A: I have only two rules really. Firstly, it's your chat, I'm just hosting. I will not interfere with the politics and internal structure of your chat, unless there is something that is affecting the project. Then I reserve the right to do whatever is necessary to protect the interests of the project. Secondly, if there is a legal threat sworn against your chat, I will not defend you with my legal counsel. I have heard stories about people threatening to sue over things that have happened in chat rooms. I honestly don't want any part of them.

Q: Okay. So what systems can you handle?

A: Currently we have designed character sheets and the associated databases for White Wolf's "World of Darkness" and the D20 system as they are the most popular. If you want to run a game under a different system, we'll ask your help in designing the sheets.
